Waves upon waves–darkness and light
Waves upon waves–laughter and tears
Arrivals at dawn, goodbyes at night
Waves upon waves:
floating down the stream.
One lonely touch, a tryst in a dream.
The wave of a hand, the turn of a head
Lost hopes of lifetimes
Lost with the dead.
Yet, desire. No strength
But a life full of toil.
Bow broken boat adrift on the waves
Wave upon wave
Swirl upon roil.
Yet, desire. No words
But a heart broken voice.
Half-hearted love
half weep, half rejoice.
And waves upon waves upon waves upon waves
upon waves upon waves
upon waves
upon waves.

Dev, you are a gifted poet. Thank you for these beautiful compositions.
The same expressive sensibility that shines through your poetry also is in your photography. I’m happy that you aren’t restricting yourself to one or the other. Often a picture is indeed worth a thousand words; but as you know, I insist that sometimes it’s the other way around. I’ll enter you as evidence if I’m ever challenged to prove that in court!
Is there a book of poetry in your future? (Or for that matter, in your past — one I’ve perhaps overlooked but should know about?)
Thank you. Again. I think poetry and photography are interchangeable. They are both brief, succinct, captures a moment. But both hide deeper meanings in layers under the obvious. It leaves a lot to the viewers’/readers’ imagination. In the same vein, a novel is more like a movie. It specifies things in more detail and while there is still an interpretive element there, in general, it is much more fleshed out and less nuanced. I would like to write a novel, but not sure if I have the temperament.
I do not have a poetry book in my past, although some poems have been published in small magazines in India (mostly because it’s an indie magazine where my father is part of the publishing group). I don’t think I have enough material to fill a book. I am not prolific with my writing as I am with my photography. Maybe after several more years, I will have accumulated enough poems to fill a chapbook.
Now, speaking of photography, I have enough material to fill a few books. And I want to make a few books. One about India/Calcutta and another about Arizona/Phoenix. I may insert a poem or two in that. Obviously, they will be self-published through blurb or something. I don’t think photobooks is a big business. Only the very famous get their photobooks made by the very famous photobook publishers. They are big, bulky and not quite readable, and therefore rather expensive. Very different model than what you find in regular books.
