Congratulations on this fortieth anniversary milestone in your numbered series, Dev! It’s a fascinating photo: Can you explain a bit about the background?
Thank you Gary. Glad you like the photo. Now your question, knowing that it’s coming from you makes me wonder if you’re not playing with words here. For instance when you mean background, do you mean the background with the image of the car or do you mean background of the photo with the background with the image of a car? I am already confusing myself…
All I can say is I was driving down through this surburban neighborhood and saw this brilliant colored painting on the garage door. Seemed jubilant especially given the neighborhood itself was a bit run down. Also, the image of water in a pretty dry and hot area… the folded up chair. All pointed to a person who probably wants to escape into that image. Not unlike myself. Hence, the photo.
Hmm. Dev, the best, most satisfying wordplay is that which occurs unintentionally. That’s the case here: I truly did not notice the ambiguity that makes my question a double entendre! In hindsight, I find that hard to believe myself, but there it is.
All I meant was, when and where did you take the photo, what about the scene interested you, any relevant particulars as to equipment and processing — that kind of “background”.
The background image (as distinct from the historical/technical context) does indeed look inviting!
