I guess you might have to take that up with Confucius…although it seems he’s been Confusious to you. ?
I am not sure what he may have meant, but what I understand of it is, learning from other people’s mistakes. So instead of making your own new mistakes to learn, you mimic someone else who has already made similar mistakes before. May be…may be not. Only Confucius knows.
